- Witnesses recount the bravery of the firefighter, who charged into the inferno upon learning that someone might still be trapped inside.
- The firefighter and the little girl are safe, currently receiving hospital treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
An ordinary Wednesday morning in Everett, Massachusetts turned into a scene of valor and fearlessness. From the top floor of a blazing building, a firefighter emerged, having saved the life of a three-year-old girl. Onlookers hailed him as an extraordinary “hero.”
The fiery situation was initially noticed by two public works employees, Jason Papa and Jesse Whinocour. While driving near the intersections of Hancock and Tappan streets, they saw smoke billowing from an apartment building.
“I told him to stop the truck. We ran in and kicked down doors. We raced into the apartments to ensure nobody was in there,” explained Whinocour.
They approximated that 20 people were still inside the building when they began their spontaneous rescue operation. However, despite their courageous efforts, the pair was unable to reach a unit on the third floor.
“There was too much flame, too much smoke. I couldn’t save her,” a distressed Whinocour admitted.
Fire departments from Malden, Chelsea, and Everett soon arrived at the scene. Amid the raging flames, one firefighter courageously dashed into the aflame apartment. Armed only with the knowledge that somebody might still be inside, he disappeared into the blaze.
“We guided him up, he went up, reappeared a few minutes later, and she was lifeless. He sprinted down the street with her,” Papa narrated about the harrowing ordeal.
Everett Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Hickey reported that both the girl and the firefighter were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Hickey suspects it originated on the third floor.
“He went up there and saved her,” asserted Whinocour. “He’s a hero…Thank God for that firefighter. She’s alive because of him.”
The details that left the little girl alone in the top-floor apartment are yet unclear. However, the true bravery of the unnamed firefighter is indisputable – a shining beacon of hope amidst the smoke and ashes.
