If you’re about to lose hope, this one’s for you.

On July 4, 2020, the Battista family of New York City went on a vacation in Ocean City, Maryland. The getaway would have been perfect, until their beloved pup, two-year-old Boston terrier Fisher, went missing.

The family did everything in their power to find the missing pooch. They had circulated posters, flooded social media with missing posts, got Fisher face-time on a local floating billboard, hired a tracker, and even went as far as consulting with an “animal communicator” to pin Fisher’s location using doggy ESP, which called for an extended stay — but to no avail.

The incident led the Battistas to create a #findfisher Facebook page, which quickly gained around 8,000 followers, and to launch an online fundraiser to help in bringing their fur baby home.

“We’ve alerted Ocean City police, fire, beach patrol, postal service, Scopes, lifeguards—you name it!” Matthew Battista wrote on Fisher’s GoFundMe page.

“Signs have been posted from the inlet to 77th St, and we have extended our canvassing to the nearby Delaware beaches of Fenwick, Bethany, Dewey, and Reheboth. We’ve extended our stay in Ocean City and arranged to bring in a professional dog tracker, in addition to making continuous searching trips in car, on foot, and on bike.”

Eventually, the family needed to return back home to New York, without Fisher, but this didn’t cause them to lose hope. They persisted in making the noise on finding Fisher even louder on social media.

And finally, everything paid off!

On April 20, 2021, 290 days after Fisher was lost, Baltimore City resident Wayne Horn spotted a stray dog.

“I called him over because cars speed up and down my road,” Wayne told Delaware Online. “He came over to me, so we gave him water. He laid down and was content, he didn’t want to leave.”

Wayne’s friend posted photos of the pooch on Facebook and comments of “That’s Fisher!” came rushing.

Elissa Battista also recognized the pup immediately: “From the moment I saw the photos I knew it was him from the markings and his little tongue sticking out.”

A micro-chip scan proved that Elissa was right, the found pup was indeed their Fisher!

Elissa drove for five hours to fetch their fur baby and finally bring him home. Apart from minor signs of possible frostbite, Fisher was in good shape.

The family was so grateful that they finally have Fisher back. They renamed his page to “Find Fisher’s Friends” to dedicate it to other missing pets. They also promised to use the remaining GoFundMe funds to a charity.

The journey of finding Fisher goes to show that hope is indeed rewarded.
