They say first impressions can last a lifetime, but for one golden retriever mix and a tiny rescue kitten, a rocky start quickly transformed into a delightful companionship. John Whitaker and his girlfriend, Victoria Angel, from Arlington, Virginia, eagerly welcomed a street-found kitten into their home, despite already having a 9-year-old dog named Sadie.

Sadie, known for her gentle nature, had never encountered a cat before. It was her “first time being around a cat,” and Whitaker was unsure of her reaction. The size difference was notable—Egg, the kitten, was only a few months old and weighed less than a pound.

Initially, their interactions were cautious and a bit tense. Sadie, who “doesn’t understand personal space,” attempted to befriend Egg, but the kitten was hesitant. However, Sadie was determined to win him over, needing just a day for Egg to adjust.

“On the first day, Egg was scared of Sadie as she is about 80 times heavier than him,” Whitaker said. “Sadie wants to be everyone’s best friend so there were plenty of times when Egg would run away, and Sadie would whine because she just wanted to make friends.”

By the second day, a remarkable change occurred. Egg began “making biscuits” on Sadie’s belly, a behavior indicating comfort and affection. According to PetMD, kneading can signify a sense of security and love when cats engage with another pet or person.

Since Egg’s rescue in August, he and Sadie have formed a close bond. Egg, now more confident, often initiates play fights and sneaks up on Sadie. Whitaker expressed joy over their relationship, saying, “Victoria and I are so in love with the relationship that Egg and Sadie have. They’re the sweetest little besties and play together every day.”

The duo’s antics, whether playing or napping, are a constant source of joy. Whitaker’s TikTok video showcasing their initial meeting and subsequent friendship garnered over 1.1 million views and 162,300 likes. He hopes it demonstrates the loving potential between cats and dogs.

“We’ve had so many comments from people saying how adorable they are,” Whitaker said. “I highly recommend adopting a pet as there are so many kittens and dogs out there waiting for a human to change their life for the better.”
