Lawmakers Unite to End Animal Testing, Inspired by Rescued Beagles

In a delightful turn of events, lawmakers were recently seen bonding with Uno, a beagle who was saved from a life of distressing laboratory experiments.

This precious pup is among nearly 4,000 beagles that found freedom from one of the testing facilities.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) shared her joy on social media, posting an image with Uno and expressing gratitude to advocacy groups for their dedication to ending federally funded animal experiments.

“Huge thanks for your work to end federally funded experiments on animals and help them all!” she exclaimed.

The organization reciprocated the appreciation, acknowledging her efforts to “expose & close the labs.”

They further emphasized, “Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to pay! #StopTheMadness.”

Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) also enjoyed a moment with Uno, sharing photos of their encounter.

“Made a new friend today!” she wrote, highlighting the importance of treating animals with care rather than cruelty.

Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) joined in the celebration, posting a picture with Uno and expressing his commitment to reducing wasteful government spending on outdated animal experiments.

“A special visitor stopped by my office today! What a treat being able to spend time with Uno the rescued lab dog and working to cut wasteful govt spending on cruel and outdated dog and cat experiments,” he added.

The distressing reality of these experiments gained attention during the coronavirus pandemic, spotlighting the practices of certain health institutions.

One particularly shocking experiment involved beagles being subjected to a horrific ordeal with sandflies as part of a drug test for disease-causing parasites.

Advocacy groups revealed in a press release that these poor pups were “vocalizing in pain” during the trials.

Documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act disclosed that $424,000 was spent on commissioning a study where healthy beagles were intentionally infested with flies carrying harmful parasites.

In February 2022, further revelations emerged through a FOIA request about puppies named after celebrities being used in these experiments.

The 74-page document included details of 28 beagle puppies, named after well-known figures like Bon Jovi and Snoop Dogg, as well as characters from the TV show Friends.

Advocacy groups first brought attention to these experiments in July 2021, noting that certain health institutes funded a vaccine efficacy trial involving beagles.

These tests were deemed “unnecessary” and involved injecting puppies with an experimental drug before euthanizing them.

The Department of Defense also came under scrutiny for spending nearly $1 million on similar testing.

Rep. Mace passionately stated, “It’s time to put an end to these cruel practices.”

“These barbaric and archaic practices must be stopped, and that is why we are leading the charge by introducing bills like the PAAW Act to keep our furry friends out of the hands of these institutions,” she added.

In a ray of hope, new data from Marymount University indicates progress towards eliminating animal use in federal experiments.
