Quick Smiles:

  • Innovative microgrids bring solar energy to social housing communities
  • Up to 15% energy bill savings for 800 households
  • Project offers a self-funding model for broader UK adoption

A pioneering solar initiative in London is making clean energy more accessible for social housing residents. The project installs solar microgrids so tenants can use the power generated right on their rooftops.

More than 4,000 panels across three Hackney estates will generate enough energy to power up to a fifth of the buildings’ needs, helping around 800 families save on their bills.

“No one should miss out on the benefits of locally generated clean energy because of their income level or the type of home they live in,” said Reg Platt, CEO of Emergent Energy.

This self-funding approach offers a sustainable model that could benefit many more communities across the UK.

Sarah Young of Hackney council shared, “One of the most important things for us is for this energy transition to be just.”

Projects like this light the way toward a fairer, greener future for everyone. Stay tuned for more positive solutions making a real difference in neighborhoods across the world!
