Man Leaves $3,000 Tip to Spread Kindness

Quick Smiles:

  • The ReesSpecht Life Foundation was created by the Specht family to honor their son, who drowned in a backyard pond during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The foundation’s goal is to encourage compassion, respect, and community by distributing “Pay it Forward” cards.
  • A generous customer left a $3,000 tip on a $43.50 bill at a restaurant in New York’s Times Square. He also left a note asking the waitress to learn about the ReesSpecht Life Foundation and to continue paying it forward.
  • The man who left the tip turned out to be a former student of Richard Specht, the founder of the ReesSpecht Life Foundation, who was moved by his former teacher’s experience and wanted to honor him and his late son.

Sometimes, the most unexpected and random acts of kindness can truly make a difference in someone’s life.

That’s exactly what happened to a waitress in New York’s Times Square when she received an incredibly generous $3,000 tip from a man who had requested anonymity.

But the story gets even better.

The man — who requested anonymity — left a $3,000 tip on a $43.50 bill for his waitress, along with a note on the back of the receipt.

“Thank you for your kindness and humility,” the note read. “My teacher in middle school had such a difficult experience a few years ago, which has sparked me to do this.”

“My only requirements are: 1) Go to and learn! 2) Don’t let ‘Pay it forward’ end with you. 3) Since it’s about the idea and not about you, or me, if you decide to share this, don’t use either of our names!”

The waitress was intrigued by the note and did some investigating. She eventually found Richard Specht and emailed him about the man’s generous gift.

Richard was shocked and moved by the gesture, writing on the ReesSpecht Life Foundation blog: “My mouth sat agape as a pictured attached to her reply that showed a restaurant receipt with a $3,000 tip on it. I literally did a double, even triple take.”

But the surprises didn’t end there.

“In staring at that receipt I never noticed the name and it wasn’t until I read the note did I realize that it was a former student of mine,” he wrote.

“I immediately recalled who he was and realized that I had him at least ten years ago… To think that someone I had a decade ago would honor my little boy, or even remember his eighth-grade science teacher in such a way, blows me away.”

The man’s act of kindness not only impacted the waitress but also his former teacher in such a beautiful and heartwarming way. It just goes to show that the power of kindness can create a ripple effect of positivity and make a huge difference in people’s lives.

“One person can make such an incredible difference. Thank you, kind sir, for your generosity and for your tribute to Rees,” Richard wrote.

So let’s all take a page from this man’s book and spread kindness and positivity wherever we go. You never know who you might be inspiring and how much of a difference you can make in someone’s life.
