  • College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving started out as a moving company founded by two college friends.
  • Now, the moving company is helping victims of domestic violence leave their abusive homes for free.
  • The company coordinates with local domestic violence-prevention shelters and local authorities to ensure the support and safety of the victims throughout the transition process.

As lockdowns force household members to stay together for months, victims of domestic violence have found it much harder to leave. But thanks to a moving company, they may now be able to escape their abusive situations for free.

College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving has announced their new commitment this month. Since their launch, they have already helped over 100 victims in the U.S. and Canada leave unsafe living situations.

Nick Friedman, the company’s co-founder, told GNN, “I definitely think our Free Moves for Survivors of Domestic Violence program sheds light on a really important issue that is not often talked about.”

“As a purpose-driven, socially-conscious organization we’re always looking for ways to positively impact our communities—in this case, particularly for those who feel powerless in unhealthy home situations,” he continued.

Another moving company, Meathead Movers, offered free moves for people in abusive situations around 20 years ago. They also partnered with eight domestic violence shelters in Central and Southern California and donated more than $150,000 worth of moving services.

College buddies Omar Soliman and Nick founded the College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving to originally haul furniture. They started with just a beat-up cargo van. H.U.N.K.S. eventually became an abbreviation for Honest, Uniformed, Nice, Knowledgeable, Service.

Now, College Hunks Hauling is providing similar services as the Meathead Movers through their 131 franchise locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Applications

Individuals who are in need of their services can notify their local domestic violence-prevention shelter about their current situation.

The shelter will then have to approve and coordinate the no-cost move request with College HUNKS and local authorities to ensure the support and safety of the victim throughout the transition process.

College Hunks also helps transport COVID-19 testing supplies and other medical equipment, relocate beds and goods from one hospital to another, and deliver water to healthcare workers.
