Quick Smiles:

  • Aloka the dog joined Buddhist monks on a peace walk first in India, now the US.
  • Despite facing injury and illness, Aloka remained devoted to the mission.
  • Communities along the route have embraced the monks and their four-legged friend.

A once-abandoned Indian Pariah dog named Aloka wandered into the lives of Buddhist monks during their opening 112-day peace walk in India, instantly becoming a loyal companion on their journey to spread unity. Despite hardships like being hit by a car and a bout of illness, Aloka chose to walk alongside his new friends rather than rest, showing remarkable determination.

“He followed us the whole time. He’s a true hero,” one monk reflected. “He wanted to walk. That inspires a lot.”

Now calling Texas home with monks from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana, Aloka has embarked on a new chapter—a 2,300-mile trek from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C. with nineteen monks, all with a common goal of inspiring compassion and togetherness.

“When I heard about this 2,300-mile walk, I was amazed,” said Texas Representative Nicole Collier. “It really touches the hearts and minds of people. We live in a time when the noise often drowns out understanding, where division can feel louder than unity—but this is what the community and interfaith solidarity looks like.”

Over 110 days and 10 states, the group has shared joy and warmth with countless strangers, receiving hospitality, meals, and even ice cream for Aloka. From checkups in Alabama to cheering crowds in the Sun Belt, every step strengthens their message of perseverance and kindness.

“It’s a journey filled with both known and unforeseen challenges,” the Walk for Peace team shared. “Yet, with hearts anchored in calmness and minds set firmly on their purpose, the monks move forward—step by step—embodying peace, resilience, and unwavering determination on their sacred path toward the White House.”

“Aloka is a very good boy helping to carry the message of peace and harmony” — faithfully watching over everyone with each mile.
