Sailor Jazz Turner Embraces Life On Her Terms

When 27-year-old Jazz Turner received a terminal diagnosis, she chose to chase her dreams instead of letting fear take hold. Undaunted by health challenges caused by Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Jazz set sail and completed a solo, non-stop voyage around the UK and Ireland.

Supported by her partner, foster parents, friends, and fellow sailors at Sailability, Jazz surrounds herself with people who share her love for life on the water.

“We focus on quality of life, rather than quantity of life.”

For Jazz, sailing is a place where she’s seen for her spirit, not her disability. She relishes the freedom and equality that the sea offers.

“At sea, Mother Nature couldn’t care less who you are, what you are or where you come from – all it cares about is your ability to adapt to the conditions.”

Her record-breaking journey was filled with tough moments, but the ocean always brought her hope and unexpected joys, from vibrant sunrises to playful dolphins alongside her boat.

“There were definitely lots of down moments,” she recalls, “but every time I felt ready to give up, the sea or nature would bring out that magic something that I needed and suck me back in.”

After overcoming a difficult upbringing and periods of homelessness, Jazz now finds strength in her community and the challenges she takes on. Inspired by her experiences, she has chosen to prioritize living fully each day.

“What I decided was that I would plan as if I have forever, but live as if I only have today.”

Jazz’s optimism and courage on the open sea remind us all to seek joy and possibility, even in the face of uncertainty.
