Quick Smiles:

  • A Virginia Santa Claus lookalike donated his kidney to a complete stranger in need
  • He lost 40 pounds to qualify as a donor, proving his dedication to helping others
  • His selfless act shows that one person’s generosity can change a life forever

For years, Dave Bell has spread Christmas cheer through Central Virginia as Santa Claus. This year, he gave the ultimate gift at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital by anonymously donating one of his kidneys.

He shared in a social media post that the decision to donate was simple for him.

“I have two of these things, and I only need one. There’s somebody who has none, and they need one.”

According to the hospital, “Living kidney donation gives people who need a transplant another possible path to care. Because the number of kidneys available from deceased donors does not meet the need, living donors can help make transplant possible sooner for some patients.”

“It’s giving children an outlet and making them feel loved and accepted,” Dave said about his Santa role. “If we all made the world a better place, what kind of place would this be. This gives me the opportunity to do that in a very small way.”

This motto inspired the Powhatan man to make an early Christmas miracle happen by donating a kidney to a stranger in need.

Though the Santa Claus-loving man won’t know who gets his kidney, Dave Bell doesn’t care. He wanted to help.

He lost 40 pounds to become eligible to donate. A later evaluation proved he was a good donor.

Dave’s story touched staff at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.

“Stories like Dave’s make organ donation feel real and personal. They show that donation is possible and that one person can make an enormous difference in someone else’s life.”

Dave posed for a photo at the hospital prior to his kidney surgery wearing a Santa hat. His selfless gift touched many hearts.

“He is a wonderful man! I’m so glad I could take care of him!”

This person agreed, writing, “How wonderful! The best gift ever! God bless him.”

“Whether he is helping a child experience the joy of meeting Santa or helping give a stranger another chance at life, Dave’s focus remains the same: Give what you can, where you can, while you can,” the hospital shared.
