Quick Smiles:

  • A Korean student received an unexpected act of kindness during a frightening moment 30 years ago
  • The Japanese boy who offered his coat never imagined his gesture would be remembered so long
  • Decades later, a heartfelt reunion reunited them across time and distance

A coat once placed over the shoulders of a young girl whose traditional Korean uniform had been slashed in a racial incident 30 years ago has now been returned to the ‘good Samaritan’ who offered it.

Norihisa Koyama was a Japanese high school student at the time of the notorious ‘hanbok slashing incidents’ when he stepped in to help a Korean classmate whose clothing had been damaged.

Park Chung-moon, then a young Korean student, never forgot the warmth of that simple gesture—or the boy who showed her compassion when she needed it most.

For three decades she kept the coat safe, determined to one day find the person who had shown her such unexpected kindness.

That day finally arrived when the two were reunited, bringing closure to a story that began in hardship but ended in gratitude.
