  • Vana Ebrahimi’s family migrated from Iran in the late 1980s and they have worked hard in an all-new country to live better lives.
  • Recently, Vana Ebrahimi finished her law degree and her brother finished his degree in medicine.
  • It was a huge success for the family so they went to visit their grandpa in the nursing home wearing caps and gowns and he was overwhelmed with joy!

A grandfather from Los Angeles was unable to hold back his tears when two grandchildren paid him a surprise visit wearing their caps and gowns because they have just recently finished graduate school.

Vana Ebrahimi recalled to Good Morning America how her grandparents migrated to the United States from Iran in the late 1980s and in 1992, her parents followed them. From then on, they all worked hard for a better life in a new country.

“For my parents, it was a crazy adjustment being in an all-new country,” Vana said. “They worked seven days a week and did everything they could for us to get the best education. They sacrificed a lot of themselves for us to be on the right steps.”

It was a long and hard journey but it was all worth it when she and her brother were the first ones to have graduated from college and were all very proud of it. More than that, Vana got her degree in law at Loyola Marymount University and her brother completed his medical degree.

Unfortunately, their grandfather, Hayrik Abnous, was unable to celebrate with them their family victory because he broke his hip and leg weeks ago and has since been recuperating at a nursing home.

“My grandpa is everyone’s rock,” Vana said. “He’s a happy-go-lucky guy. He always has a smile on.”

She even boasts to people that her special trait of smiling all the time and looking at the positive side of things is something she got from her grandfather.

Of course, they have to find a way to celebrate their achievement with their grandfather so they decided to visit him in the nursing home wearing their graduation caps and gowns.

“We just decided since we’re both graduating, let’s go and surprise him and wear our cap and gowns,” Vana told KTLA. “It was a big deal for us to include him.”

A video of their grandfather’s reaction upon seeing them went viral as he broke down in tears of pure joy from his heart.

“It was heartbreaking but cute at the same time,” Vana said. “It was a surreal feeling for us both. It’s the American dream.”
