Quick Smiles:

  • Two buddies spot a ski tip poking from powder during Tahoe ski trip.
  • They dig frantically, rescuing man buried six feet under soft snow.
  • Grateful skier reunites with wife, skis down safely thanks to their quick action.

Carson Schmidt and Eric Masuda drove seven hours to ski at Palisades Tahoe in Olympic Valley, California.

Spotting a ski tip in the deep snow, they sprang into heroic action to save the trapped skier.

“Carson noticed him, thankfully,” Masuda said. “I could barely see the ski tip sticking out and the snow was so soft.”

The powerful snow had knocked the man onto his back, filling his mouth and pinning his arms as he sank deeper.

“It seemed like the more he struggled, the deeper he sank, because the snow was bottomless,” Masuda said.

Once freed, the skier’s first words were about finding his wife, showing the power of friendship in crisis.

Palisades Tahoe confirmed it was heavy fresh snow, not an avalanche, and the man declined ski patrol help to ski down.

“His first words were all he wanted to find was his wife,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt cherishes the moment of community support on the slopes.

“It feels really good. But it’s the community, you know. Everybody’s got each other out there,” he said.
