Special Needs Dog Found A Buddy For Life In Wilma The Pig

  • When Charlotte’s Freedom Farm founder Lauren Edwards adopted Winnie at 4 weeks old, he had an undeveloped front leg and sternum.
  • At the farm, Winnie was introduced to Wilma the piglet who became his best playmate and buddy.
  • Winnie’s friendship with Wilma has enabled him to also make friends with all the animals, staff and visitors at the farm.

Winston, more popularly known at Charlotte’s Freedom Farm as Winnie, did not fully develop while he was still in the womb.  His front legs are underdeveloped and his sternum does not connect to his ribs.  He needs a chest protector.

When the farm’s founder Lauren Edwards learned about Winnie’s struggle in staying healthy and needing special attention, she took him in.

At the farm, he was treated with extra care so as not to endanger his chest.  He also got to meet with Wilma the piglet while waiting for his customized chest protector.

The two were almost the same size so the farm staff did not worry about an accidental kick or heavy weight on Winnie’s chest.   In fact, within two minutes of the meeting, they were already play-wrestling.

They slept together and developed a bond like no other. Their friendship is such a delight to see.

And even if Wilma has grown quite a bit already, the buddies still get to see each other often.  Every time that they meet, they run to each other and still wrestle and roll.  Wilma even exhibits some dog habits that she has imbibed from being best buds with Winnie.

Life at the form has indeed done wonders for Winnie.  He has been fitted with a wheelchair and chest protector which allows him to explore and make friends with everyone at the farm — animals, staff, and visitors. Winnie simply loves everyone.

For his special needs, WeRateDogs has been instrumental in raising funds through its social media accounts.  And since surgery will be needed in time, the funds would also come in handy.

Edwards says that Winnie provides joy and happiness all day and every day at the farm. “He’s my whole world right now. I love this little guy.”
