Sunny the Cat Becomes Kitten’s Fierce Bodyguard
Quick Smiles:

- Adopting and rescuing cats can be both challenging and rewarding.
In a delightful twist of fate, an orange cat named Sunny has taken on the role of a vigilant guardian for a newly rescued kitten, and the internet can’t get enough of it.
The amusing event was captured in a video shared on TikTok by Denise Glessner, where Sunny can be seen perched on his cat tree, keeping a watchful eye on the sleeping kitten nearby.
“Not sure what his problem is. Every time I try to touch the kitten he tries to smack me,” Denise narrates in the video.
As she attempts to touch the kitten again, Sunny responds with a firm swat.
“Jerk! You won’t let me touch the baby? Why can’t I touch the baby?”
Despite multiple attempts, Denise finds herself thwarted by Sunny’s protective behavior.
“Are you going to let me touch the baby?” she asks, only to be met with more resistance.
The video, captioned “He is guarding the new kitten we rescued,” quickly went viral, amassing over 597,300 views and 93,600 likes.
Denise, from Fresno, California, shared that Sunny was rescued from a local cemetery when he was about 8 weeks old.
Initially meant to be fostered and socialized for adoption, Sunny’s charm won over Denise’s family, and they decided to keep him.
“Although he acclimated to the indoor life well, he still gets skittish and has some ‘feral’ tendencies. One of those is we have a custom-made cat tree in our living room that our cats just love,” Denise explained.
“Every time he gets in that tree, he becomes very territorial, spitting and slapping (without claws) when we reach in to touch him, but will run to get us and then run up in the tree, so it is obvious that this is his way of playing. He is just full of character and we adore him.”
The kitten Sunny was “protecting” was also a rescue from the same cemetery, and like Sunny, ended up being a permanent addition to the family.
“Although this story has a fun and happy ending, animal rescue and TNR (trap, spay/neuter, release) does not always have a happy ending. Outdoor cats have very hard lives. They are subjected to hunger, the harsh elements, predators, illness/trauma, cars, and some not so nice people.”
Denise emphasized the importance of spaying and neutering pets, stating, “Statistics show that only 25 percent of kittens born outdoors survive past 6 months. Please spay/neuter your pets and remember that adoption is a long-term commitment. Please consider donating to the groups that help our community, or donate to a rescue or TNR group in your community!”
PETA highlights that between 60 and 100 million homeless cats live on the streets of the U.S., facing numerous threats such as contagious diseases, worms, fleas, and untreated injuries.
Additionally, free-roaming cats pose a significant threat to wildlife, with the American Bird Conservancy estimating that they kill millions of birds and small mammals annually.
Introducing a new kitten into a household with an established cat can be a delicate process.
Experts suggest introducing the two cats through their scent first, using a cloth to transfer the kitten’s scent to the older cat while rewarding them with treats to create a positive association.
It’s crucial to provide each cat with personal space and monitor their interactions until they are comfortable with each other.
