  • Pharmacy chain offers paid friend time to employees
  • Pilot program aims to reduce loneliness and boost well-being
  • Participants already feel happier and more connected

Finding time for friendship can be tough when life gets busy, but Swedish pharmacy chain Apotek Hjärtat is stepping up to help. They’ve launched a year-long pilot called ‘friendcare,’ giving employees paid hours to spend with friends and nurture their social connections.

Right now, 11 people are taking part in the program. Many, like participant Yasmine Lindbergh, say it’s already making a difference.

“I’m really tired when I go home. I don’t have time or energy to meet my friends,” she said.

Yasmine shared that the initiative encourages her to reconnect and prioritize her own well-being.

“I wanted to make it better for myself… like, kick myself in the back to do stuff,” she said.

“I feel happier. You can’t live through the internet like most people do these days.”

Monica Magnusson, the company’s CEO, explained that the idea originated from a mental health project and aims to fight loneliness and support relationships.

“We try and see what the effects are from having the opportunity to spend a bit of time every week on safeguarding your relationships,” Monica explained. “This is a reflection on that, but targeting loneliness and relationships instead.”

Psychologist Daniel Ek believes this program is perfect for Sweden’s culture, where making new friends can be challenging.

“The Swedish mentality is like – you shouldn’t disturb others. We value personal space a lot, and we have a hard time breaking the ice,” he shared.

This uplifting idea is already making waves and inspiring smiles. Could it be the start of a new trend in workplace well-being?
