  • Swiss family invents Europe’s first all-electric, solar-assisted tractor
  • Rigitrac SKE 40 now sold in five countries and featured in a video game
  • The family won the prestigious Golden Watt award for innovation

The Knüsel family from Switzerland’s Schwyz region has transformed agriculture with their solar-assisted, all-electric tractor, now available in Austria, Norway, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Sepp Knüsel and his four daughters brought the idea to life after noticing the potential of solar panels on local farms to energize daily work.

In 2019, their teamwork led to the debut of the Rigitrac SKE 40, Europe’s first of its kind, and earned them national recognition six years later with the coveted Watt d’Or award. Each daughter contributes their expertise to Rigitrac AG, supporting everything from advertising to sales and supply management.

“The development of the electric tractor was a long process with setbacks,”

said Theres Beutler-Knüsel, the managing director and second-oldest daughter, reflecting on the family’s persistence. Their innovative approach included collaborating with suppliers to create components when none existed on the market.

Designed with four electric motors and solar capabilities, the tractor shines in tasks like vegetable farming and snow clearing. Its inclusion in the Farming Simulator video game brings further excitement to its story, inspiring future generations of sustainable farmers.

“Great recognition that shows us that we are on the right path.”

Beutler-Knüsel shared about their Watt d’Or honor, highlighting the significant encouragement it gave the family.
