A 13-year-old has been celebrated for his remarkable courage after battling rough seas for four hours to help save his family during their Australian holiday.

Strong winds had blown their paddleboards out to sea, separating the boy from his mother and two siblings. As his canoe started to take on water, he made the decision to swim to shore wearing his life jacket, determined to get help.

Commander Paul Bresland of Cape Naturaliste Marine Rescue shared,

“And the brave fella thought he’s not going to make it with a life jacket on, so he ditched it, and he swam the next 2 hours without a life jacket…that is incredible.”

After reaching land, the teenager quickly raised the alarm, prompting a multi-agency rescue involving boats and a helicopter. Thanks to his detailed descriptions, his family was found within the hour, having drifted seven miles into the Indian Ocean.

Their mother, who managed to keep her two other children together through the ordeal, received high praise for her resilience.

“Physically, she just said, ‘I’m struggling, I can’t,’ but she just said they’re looking her in the eye, and she just kept going and kept them together,” said Mr. Bresland.

All family members were given a checkup at the hospital and soon afterward visited rescuers to thank them. Authorities highlighted the importance of life jackets and monitoring wind conditions, celebrating the family’s safe outcome.
