In December 2023, a dog found a tiny 2-pound Kemp’s ridley sea turtle on a beach in Wales—one of the most endangered species of sea turtles in the world. The little turtle, lovingly named Rhossi, had somehow traveled 5,000 miles from his native Gulf of Mexico home.

What followed was an incredible two-year journey that would restore faith in humanity’s dedication to protecting Earth’s most vulnerable creatures.

The compassionate team at the Anglesey Sea Zoo immediately took in the cold-stunned turtle and began nursing him back to health. Through patience, expert care, and unwavering commitment, they helped Rhossi grow stronger day by day.

On August 10, 2026, Rhossi finally made his transatlantic flight home to Texas, where he arrived at the Houston Zoo to continue his recovery journey.

Because Rhossi had drifted so far from his natural habitat and survived dangerously cold waters, his recovery required years of dedicated care. The team at Anglesey Sea Zoo worked tirelessly to help the fragile hatchling thrive.

Through their expert attention, Rhossi grew from a vulnerable 2-pound baby to a robust, nearly 50-pound juvenile turtle ready for the next chapter of his journey.

Veterinarians at the Houston Zoo placed Rhossi into a deep tank to help him acclimate to his new surroundings and prepare for his eventual return to the Gulf of Mexico.

“Great to see the little one finally in the hands of people that know what they are doing!”

“Sending love and prayers.”

The Houston Zoo shared a heartwarming update on Rhossi’s progress and expressed deep gratitude to everyone who made his safe journey home possible.

“While his return to the Gulf of Mexico will take a little longer than expected, Rhossi’s story is a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion in wildlife conservation. For now, the focus remains on getting this resilient sea turtle healthy and ready for his long-awaited return home.”

Rhossi’s incredible adventure reminds us that when caring people work together across continents, miracles happen. This lucky little guy is living proof that kindness knows no borders—and that every life is worth saving.
