Quick Smiles:

  • A middle-school English test unexpectedly linked a strawberry farmer with a determined young student
  • Years later the same student earned a place at a top university and now studies artificial intelligence at the postgraduate level
  • The farmer still answers every call that comes from the exam question, using each one to offer encouragement and life advice

A young student has been accepted into a prestigious university thanks in part to an unusual source of inspiration: a strawberry farmer he met because of a question on an English exam.

Now a postgraduate student in artificial intelligence, He Ziqi was in middle school when he was taking an English language exam and saw the farmer’s phone number printed as part of a reading passage.

Curious, he dialed the number and struck up a conversation that would last for years.

Farmer Wang never expected his private cell number to appear on a standardized test, yet he turned every surprise call into an opportunity to mentor students who reached out.

“I never thought a simple test could change two lives,” Wang shared.

Over the next six years the two stayed in touch, with Wang offering steady encouragement as He Ziqi prepared for high-stakes entrance exams.

When acceptance letters finally arrived, the young scholar made sure the farmer who had cheered him on was among the first to know.

“He gave me belief when I needed it most,” He Ziqi said.

Today the farmer still answers every call that comes from that long-ago exam question, turning each ring into a moment of guidance, hope, and connection.
