Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission is investing 30 billion pesos to boost solar energy with 1.5 gigawatts of production and storage.

The flagship Puerto Peñasco project in sunny Sonora expands by 580 megawatts, including 30% battery storage, set for completion by 2028.

“We are delivering on a strategic objective: ensuring the country’s energy sovereignty through orderly, clean and sufficient planning,” said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Two Coahuila sites add 556 megawatts: 180MW at Rio Escondido and 376MW at Carbón II, each with 30% storage.

Three more projects are under review in Durango, Quintana Roo, and Guanajuato.

“We are working through tripartite technical committees to review the technical characteristics and the status of prior permitting for each project. This is a binding planning exercise that will allow for an orderly start to development,” explained Emilia Calleja, CEO of CFE.
