  • Tyler Perry Studios gave away free meals and gift cards for 5,000 families on Sunday during its Thanksgiving event, TPS Giving.
  • The community’s need was highlighted as Atlanta saw long lines of cars with families hoping to pick up the freebies.
  • The event ensured safety amid the pandemic by only allowing drive-thru and requiring volunteers and participants to wear masks.

Tyler Perry made sure to kick off Thanksgiving by giving back to the community through his Atlanta movie studio, Tyler Perry Studios.

The Sunday event, dubbed TPS Giving, provided 5,000 families with packages containing food and gift cards for local supermarket chain Kroger.

The star and Madea franchise creator funded the event while studio employees volunteered to hand out the goods.

A source close to Perry told PEOPLE, “Tyler was heartbroken seeing people all over the country stand in line for food so he decided he wanted to give back to his community in Atlanta. Hopefully, this encourages others who are able to, to give back during the holiday season in a year that has been difficult for many.”

The event highlighted the community’s need as long lines of cars showed up 12 hours before the event started.

Perry, 51, has been known to be charitable.

Earlier this year, he helped George Floyd’s family attend his funeral services by paying for their private plane travel. He also paid for the funeral expenses for Rayshard Brooks and Secoria Turner.

In July, Perry donated 1,000 Kroger gift cards to Atlanta residents. In August, he donated a van to an Atlanta’s women’s organization that gives homeless people hygiene products.

Through Tyler Perry Studios and The Perry Foundation, which he launched back in 2006, he keeps creating equal opportunities for BIPOC, supporting civil rights causes, and aiding charities and people in need.
