  • Despite domestication, dogs retain some natural hunting instincts.
  • Predation substitute training can help manage a dog’s prey drive.

A golden retriever puppy from Chicago has taken the internet by storm with his amusing antics. Captured on camera, Benson, the puppy, attempts to mimic a wild predator stalking its prey.

The viral TikTok video shared by @chicagosgoldenboy shows Benson stealthily approaching his owner before playfully pouncing on her with his fluffy paws.

“The most dangerous predator in town. Don’t let the fluff fool you, I bite like a shark!” reads the humorous caption accompanying the video.

While many dog owners view their furry companions as gentle beings, it’s fascinating to remember that all dogs are descendants of wild wolves. This lineage means they still harbor some of their ancestors’ hunting instincts.

Dr. Harunur Rashid, in an article for Vet Advises, explains that despite thousands of years of domestication, dogs retain natural hunting abilities. These include keen senses and the capacity to chase and capture prey.

Over time, however, evolution has altered these instincts. Domesticated dogs have adapted their jaws for an omnivorous diet and have developed new social patterns and learning abilities.

Certain breeds, such as border collies, greyhounds, and German shepherds, exhibit a stronger prey drive. Their preferred targets often include squirrels, rabbits, birds, and rodents.
