Quick Smiles:

  • Charles Martin Hall’s discovery made aluminum accessible for everyone.
  • Roy Hodgson concluded a remarkable football management career at Crystal Palace.
  • Woody Guthrie penned the iconic lyrics to This Land Is Your Land.

140 years ago, American inventor Charles Martin Hall revolutionized the world by using electrolysis to extract aluminum, dropping its price dramatically and opening up endless possibilities for its use.

Before Hall’s breakthrough, aluminum was so precious and costly that it rivaled gold, and was a subject of fascination and legends dating back to ancient Rome.

Over time, the demand and ease of aluminum production soared, making it the most produced non-ferrous metal today, appearing in everything from soda cans to airplanes.

Hall, one of Oberlin College’s most generous supporters, is honored with a lightweight aluminum statue on campus that students love to decorate for various occasions.

Good things also happened on this date: The Gutenberg Bible was printed, Alabama enacted the first antitrust law in the US, the Rotary Club was founded, the first polio vaccine campaign began, cultural ties strengthened between East and West, US daylight saving time shifted for energy savings, and Norah Jones won five Grammy Awards for her debut album.

Seven years ago, Roy Hodgson set a Premier League record as the oldest manager, ending a 48-year career at the very club where his football journey began.

Throughout his career, Hodgson managed 22 clubs across several countries and led national teams, earning respect and accolades along the way.

“At the base of it, I still enjoy watching how teams set up to attack, and how they set up to defend.”

86 years ago, Woody Guthrie wrote the timeless lyrics to This Land Is Your Land, inspiring generations through its hopeful spirit and message.

Happy 45th birthday to Josh Gad, beloved for bringing Olaf to life in Frozen and for his stage work, as he looks forward to new creative adventures.
