  • A stray with a badly damaged ear was rescued by the Happily Furever Rescue in North Carolina.
  • Its ear had to be amputated which earned him the name Van Gogh.
  • Van Gogh lives up to his namesake with his peanut butter-licked acrylic paintings that have raised funds for the shelter and encouraged the adoption of the shelter’s wards.

When a stray dog was found in a drain pipe in North Carolina, its ears were badly damaged from being used for dog fighting.  Happily Furever After Rescue workers brought him to a vet who recommended for the ear be amputated.

The famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh, had a cut-off ear and so, the dog was named after him.

The 7-year-old-pitbull mix came to live at the shelter and in time, they discovered that he had a talent for painting just like his namesake.

The discovery came when the rescue founder, Jacklyn Gartner, got an idea to promote adoption after Van Gogh’s adoption process fell through.

She smeared peanut butter on a zip-lock bag that was filled with acrylic paint and a small canvass. When the dog started licking the peanut butter, it created an abstract artwork!

Van Gogh then proceeded to make 10 masterpieces and a gallery viewing featuring his works was mounted.  Sadly, only two people came.

Gartner said, “Van Gogh put many hours and a lot of love into creating such beautiful art and we worked so hard to make this a special event.”

But all was not lost as the shelter’s post on the sad story went viral enough to send people lining up for Van Gogh’s artworks! They were able to sell 30 of his works at $40 each! The rescue would have funds to shelter more pups! Plus, adoption applications are pouring in for the artist!

What a truly creative way to drum up adoption for all the rescues!

We wish you all the best and may you find your forever home soon, Van Gogh! Keep painting!
