A Week of Hopeful Breakthroughs and Bright News
Quick Smiles:
- Gene therapy offers hope to blood cancer patients
- Economies achieve growth while cutting emissions
- Lost bird species returns to London
This week brought a wave of uplifting breakthroughs and hopeful progress from around the globe. Scientists announced a remarkable advancement in gene therapy, showing that white blood cells edited to fight cancer are helping patients achieve deep remission from previously untreatable blood cancers.
“A few years ago this would have been science fiction,” said UCL’s Prof Waseem Qasim.
Seven patients remain disease-free three years after treatment, including Alyssa Tapley, who shared,
“I’ve now been able to do some of the things I thought earlier in my life it would be impossible for me to do. My ultimate goal is to become a research scientist and be part of the next big discovery that can help people like me.”
On a global scale, countries responsible for almost all of the world’s economy are now growing while reducing their emissions, thanks to changes implemented since 2015. According to researcher John Lang,
“We’re sometimes told the world can’t cut emissions without cutting growth. The opposite is happening.”
Further brightening the news, a species of bird once believed lost is returning to London, a symbol of nature’s resilience and the positive impact of conservation efforts.
With innovative solutions taking root and nature making a comeback, it’s a wonderful time to celebrate humanity’s capacity for positive change. Share this good energy and inspire a friend today!
