  • Officers Sara Gianino and Allyson Steinkamp responded to a call at the Lighthouse Point Police Department (LHPPD).
  • A dog was struggling to keep afloat in a canal and the two officers quickly jumped in to save the poor animal.
  • A family passing by also helped the officers in the rescue and was able to save the dog from drowning.

Officers Sara Gianino and Allyson Steinkamp were on duty at the Lighthouse Point Police Department (LHPPD) when they got a call about a distressed dog.

The dog, Sarge, was struggling to swim in a canal at low tide with a high sea wall.

When the two officers got to the scene, Officer Sara Gianino thought that the dog looked like it could not swim for much longer.

Realizing that there was no spot on the perimeter to stand on and anything stable to support them, they decided on using a broken dock to get the dog out of the canal.

The officers acted fast and took off their gear. Officer Gianino jumped in the water while Officer Steinkamp stayed at the dock to receive the dog.

Fortunately, the King family was sailing by on their boat and one family member jumped in to help the two officers.

They grabbed the 80-pound pup and hoisted him up to Officer Steinkamp, who got a hold of his collar.

Sarge, the adventure-loving pup, happily wagged his tail the moment he set foot on the dock. Gianino said, “He was so happy to be out. He was super cheerful.”

He was then immediately returned to his mom, Alex Griffin, and his “girlfriend,” Jenny.  For now, Sarge is being closely monitored to prevent him from getting into trouble again.
