A remarkable breakthrough shines new hope for those with untreatable macular degeneration, as a unique eye implant paired with augmented reality glasses has given back functional vision to blind eyes.

After receiving the device, participants could read multiple lines on a vision chart, with some unable to see the chart at all before. The European trial, covering 38 patients over five countries, revealed that 84% of patients could recognize words and letters using the prosthetic system.

The PRIMA device features a tiny microchip implanted in the eye, which receives images through a video camera mounted on the AR glasses. This visual information is processed by a small computer and transformed into electrical signals that travel through the optic nerve, allowing the brain to interpret images as vision.

Patients train for several months to learn how to use the new system, developing skills to focus and read using their prosthetic vision. Additional features like zoom and focused scanning help users adjust to the restored capability.

“In the history of artificial vision, this represents a new era,” said Mr. Mahi Muqit, associate professor at University College London and consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

“Blind patients are actually able to have meaningful central vision restoration, which has never been done before.”

He added, “Getting back the ability to read is a major improvement in their quality of life, lifts their mood and helps to restore their confidence and independence.” The procedure takes under two hours and can be performed by specially trained surgeons.

Macular degeneration often causes gradual loss of sight, sometimes leading to total central vision loss through a process called geographic atrophy. There are currently no other treatments available for this condition, which affects millions worldwide.

The PRIMA microchip is similar in size to a SIM card and is installed during a simple procedure. No loss of peripheral vision was recorded during trials, and researchers hope this success will lead to broader global approval.

Sheila Irvine, a patient at Moorfields Eye Hospital who received the implant, shared her story with deep gratitude.

“I wanted to take part in research to help future generations, and my optician suggested I get in touch with Moorfields,” she said. “Before receiving the implant, it was like having two black discs in my eyes, with the outside distorted.”

She added, “I was an avid bookworm, and I wanted that back. It’s a new way of looking through your eyes, and it was dead exciting when I began seeing a letter. It’s not simple, learning to read again, but the more hours I put in, the more I pick up.”

Researchers across the UK, France, Italy, and the Netherlands remain optimistic about future possibilities, with hopes that this technology could soon treat multiple types of vision loss.
