Bay Scallops Flourish Along Virginia’s Shores
Quick Smiles:
- Bay scallops are thriving again in Virginia’s coastal bays after nearly a century.
- Decades of dedicated seagrass restoration made this impressive comeback possible.
- Researchers anticipate the population could double in less than 18 months.
A remarkable survey has found bay scallops making a triumphant return to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. This resurgence follows years of seagrass restoration that gave the species a chance to reclaim its former habitat.
Once absent for nearly 90 years, bay scallops (Argopecten irradians) are now being routinely counted in numbers previously thought impossible just a short time ago.
Experts from the College of William & Mary and VIMS Eastern Shore Laboratory in Wachapreague played a key role in restoring the seagrass and reintroducing the scallops.
If current growth continues, residents could someday harvest their own bay scallops, pending approval from state regulators.
“The restoration of bay scallops to their former range along the Virginian Eastern Shore represents a significant societal and ecological achievement,” said VIMS ESL Director Richard Snyder.
The ongoing effort has transformed over 600 acres of seagrass into a vibrant 9,000-acre underwater meadow, now recognized as the largest and most successful seagrass restoration project in the world.
“It’s incredibly fulfilling to see this progress,” shared Darian Kelley, nursery manager at VIMS ESL.
This success not only boosts the coastal ecosystem’s resilience but also holds promise for the local aquaculture industry.
