Blind Pitmaster Grills Up Texas Inspiration

Quick Smiles:

  • Christopher Jones runs Blindfolded Barbeque in Duncanville, Texas, cooking everything himself.
  • Jones learned to grill using touch, sound, taste, and especially smell after losing his sight to diabetic retinopathy.
  • He uses family recipes to create delicious BBQ, inspiring guests and raising awareness about blindness.

Christopher Jones greets curious customers with a simple answer when they ask about his flavorful barbeque: he cooks just like anyone else, but with more focus.

The extra attention is essential for Jones, who began to lose his sight five years ago due to diabetic retinopathy.

This challenge didn’t stop him; instead, it encouraged him to open Blindfolded Barbeque and bring his community together, feeding his neighbors as well as his seven children.

“It’s a conversation starter, and that’s what I want to do is just bring awareness to it,” Jones shared.

With his grandfather’s recipes in hand, he taught himself to cook without sight, mastering the BBQ craft by relying on his other senses.

“I have to rely on a lot of smell because I can measure, but if I know it’s too much, then I’ll fix it,” he explained.
