Bob Ross Paintings Bring Joy and Support Public TV
Quick Smiles:
- Three Bob Ross paintings were auctioned for over $600,000 to benefit public television.
- The works sold for far more than initial estimates, reflecting Ross’s enduring appeal.
- All proceeds will help fund programming on the Create Channel.
Three original works from Bob Ross’s beloved series, The Joy of Painting, have fetched more than $600,000 at auction, offering a bright boost for public television funding.
This creative fundraiser placed the gentle artist’s legacy and perspective back in the spotlight decades after his passing.
“I think this actually would have been Bob’s idea,” said Joan Kowalski, president of Bob Ross Inc., ahead of the auction.
The remarkable auction followed recent cuts to PBS budgets and came after two Bob Ross paintings previously achieved six-figure sales—an extraordinary milestone for his work.
The featured pieces—Home in the Valley (1993), Cliffside (1990), and Winter’s Peace (1993)—quickly surpassed expectations, with each painting finding eager buyers and one piece commanding $318,000 alone.
“I think that there’s a certain amount of snobbery in the art business, but Bob is a cultural touchstone,” shared Aaron Bastian, senior director at Bonhams.
Ross’s approachable style and gentle personality made his paintings and programs accessible across multiple generations, from parents who watched with their children to new fans discovering him online.
He was known for painting several versions of each scene: one as a guide before the show, one live on camera, and a final, detailed piece for instructional booklets. These works often stayed together in his collection or were donated to public institutions.
All auction proceeds will support Create Channel’s programming, ensuring public television continues to inspire and educate audiences nationwide.
More paintings from Ross’s collection will be auctioned in the future, continuing his legacy of giving back.
If you’re inspired by Bob Ross’s impact, share this story and help keep public television thriving!
