A compassionate woman is being hailed as a hero after swimming into frigid waters to rescue an injured seagull. The bird had been trapped in tangled fishing line for over five hours at Stanley Park Lake.

Wildlife volunteer Stuart Beaton first spotted the distressed animal and alerted the team at Brambles Wildlife Rescue. Recognizing the urgency, they called upon Lorraine Bullar, an experienced rescuer with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

“Thankfully heroine Lorraine, who is a friend of the Rescue, offered her help,” said Mel Greenhalgh of Brambles.

Lorraine donned her wetsuit and swam 50 feet into the cold lake to retrieve the exhausted gull. She carefully swam back to shore with the bird tucked securely under her arm to ensure its safety.

“That’s no mean feat swimming with a gull under your arm!”

“Luckily she only chewed on her wetsuit.”

Once back on land, the team successfully removed the fishing hook and transported the bird to a clinic. The seagull, now nicknamed Patience, is recovering well with specialized care and medication.

“It was a smashing piece of teamwork yet again by all involved,” Mel added while praising the successful mission.
