Cancer Survivor Eases Burden for Patients With Parking Gift
Quick Smiles:
- Krystyna Locke, a cancer survivor, raises funds to help patients with parking costs at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Center.
- She has already raised over $5,000 and plans to continue her efforts every year on her birthday.
- Her compassion brings relief and uplifts patients and families during challenging times.
After bravely facing lymphoma for 20 years, Krystyna Locke is now cancer free and choosing to give back to fellow patients. She is determined to spare others from the high parking fees that can add up during cancer treatments by fundraising for parking vouchers at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Center in Ontario.
“The need is there,” Krystyna shared. “Some people have to come in every day for treatment, and parking can feel like one more thing to deal with. I wanted to spark some joy in their day.”
Diagnosed in 2004, Krystyna regularly visited the cancer clinic as part of her journey. Now, during the weeks surrounding her 63rd birthday, she sets up a booth offering free parking to bring smiles to others walking a similar path.
“Today, I received hugs. I received kisses on the cheek. I shared tears with people. I shared laughter. There was joking. It just completely lightens the mood,” she reflected.
Her kindness has inspired gratitude throughout the community.
“We are deeply grateful to Krystyna for her generosity and compassion toward patients at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Center,” said Carey Landry, director of the South West Regional Cancer Program. “Facing a cancer diagnosis is an emotional journey, and helping cover parking costs removes one worry for patients and their families. Krystyna’s kindness is a shining example of the difference one person can make in our community.”
So far, she has raised over $5,000 via a fund through LHSF and intends to return each year around her birthday to continue this mission.
“This is also a part of my own healing process,” she said. “I want to show my children and grandkids how meaningful it can be to give to others.”
John H. MacFarlane, president and CEO of LHSF, expressed his support: “Her gift lifts a weight off patients and families during one of the most difficult times of their lives. We’re proud to support her mission.”
By relieving this extra financial strain, Krystyna’s efforts help patients focus on their recovery and provide a sense of hope and comfort during a challenging journey.
Be inspired and invite positivity into your own day by celebrating acts of kindness like Krystyna’s!
