Centenarian Priest Shares Secrets to Happy Aging
Quick Smiles:
- Father James Joseph Kelly remains dedicated to a calm and structured life at age 100.
- He credits consistency and self-discipline for his long, fulfilling ministry and well-being.
- Social connections and enjoying music help keep his outlook positive and engaged.
Father James Joseph Kelly, now 100, starts each day peacefully without an alarm and continues to lead an inspiring, active life. With over 75 years serving the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, he’s touched the lives of many families and guided generations, especially during his two decades as pastor of St. Pius X in Broomall.
“I’ve never used an alarm clock all my life,” Kelly says. “I wake up almost automatically around 5.”
Enduring recent health challenges, he continues to say Mass daily at Normandy Farms Estates in Pennsylvania and remains actively involved in community life. Kelly attributes his longevity to a steady routine rather than extreme habits, avoiding alcohol and tobacco while focusing on enriching activities and longstanding friendships.
“I was very disciplined, self-disciplined all my life,” he says. “I never drank. I never smoked.”
Rather than restricting himself with a strict diet, Kelly prefers to eat wholesome foods, enjoys milk and fruit, and avoids excessive carbohydrates, resulting in excellent reports from his doctors. He still delights in baking pies and finds joy in simple pleasures.
“My blood pressure’s wonderful. I’m happy, I’m contented,” he shares.
Mental stimulation keeps him engaged, with a passion for travel, music, reading, and the arts. Attending the Philadelphia Orchestra was his favorite therapy, and he still enjoys lectures and concerts.
“I love to cook, I travel, I love music, I love lectures, I like politics, I’ve been multifaceted,” Kelly notes.
Friendships remain essential to his happiness, as he cherishes social gatherings and meaningful connection with others.
“I have many friends, so I’m fortunate for the friends that I have, that I’m able to call upon them,” Kelly adds.
Preparing to celebrate his 101st birthday, Father Kelly embraces each day with gratitude for both his health and community, believing age is simply a number.
