China Unveils World’s Strongest Gravity Centrifuge

Quick Smiles:
- Zhejiang University reveals the CHIEF1900, the world’s largest and most powerful gravitational centrifuge.
- This innovation allows scientists to test objects with up to 300 times Earth’s gravity, enhancing safety and efficiency.
- The facility welcomes users worldwide and encourages groundbreaking international collaboration.
At Zhejiang University in China, the new CHIEF1900 gravitational centrifuge now allows scientists to test scale models of dams, railways, submersibles, and space capsules under extreme gravitational forces. The centrifuge, located in Hangzhou’s Centrifugal Hypergravity and Interdisciplinary Experiment Facility, can expose objects to up to 300 times the force of gravity, advancing scientific research while protecting full-scale originals.
It surpasses previous devices by offering about 40% more power than similar equipment in the US, spinning objects weighing up to 20 metric tons at forces reaching around 100g. This breakthrough enables researchers to replicate and accelerate real-world conditions and centuries-long processes in just days.
“For example, to assess the structural stability of a dam 300 meters (984 feet) tall, scientists can build a three-meter model and spin it at 100g,” writes South China Morning Post’s Jing Lin. “This replicates the same stress levels the full-scale dam would experience in the real world.”
The device’s versatility allows testing a wide range of objects under various conditions. Chen Yunmin, CHIEF’s chief scientist and professor at Zhejiang University, said, “We aim to create experimental environments that span milliseconds to tens of thousands of years, and atomic to [kilometer] scales—under normal or extreme conditions of temperature and pressure.”
The CHIEF1900 was constructed by a large, multidisciplinary team working with minimal precedent, resulting in a truly pioneering facility. Open to universities, institutions, and industries worldwide, it fosters innovation and global scientific cooperation.
