Quick Smiles:

  • Christmas Island transforms as millions of red crabs participate in their annual migration.
  • Residents use creative tools like leaf blowers and crab plows to help their tiny neighbors travel safely.
  • The event creates unforgettable moments of community kindness and connection with nature.

Every year in November, Christmas Island in Australia turns into a sea of brilliant red as around 100 million red crabs embark on a dramatic migration from forest to beach.

Locals embrace this breathtaking spectacle, working together to help the crabs complete their journey without harm.

During the late October to November breeding season, the crabs emerge from their burrows, marching across roads and gardens toward the sea.

As acting park manager Alexia Jankowski explained,

“Some people might think they’re a nuisance, but most of us think they’re a bit of a privilege to experience. They’re indiscriminate. So whatever they need to get over to get to the shore, they will go over it.”

Islanders adjust their routines with humor and patience, from raking crabs off driveways to closing roads at peak migration hours.

Special crab bridges and barriers help funnel the crustaceans safely over busy areas, while inventive residents even attach rubber “crab plows” to their cars.

Once the crabs reach the beach, males dig burrows for the females, who will lay eggs destined to hatch by mid-November.

The next generation returns in late December, each one as tiny as a sunflower seed, and locals use leaf blowers to gently guide them back across roads and trails.

This shared experience connects the community with nature, fostering joy and wonder every year.

Across the globe, others share similar bonds with wildlife, like a Connecticut dry cleaner who helps turtles safely cross their store during annual migrations.
