Christmas Tree Lane in Fresno, California, traces its origins to a heartfelt 1920 tribute when Mae Winning decorated a cedar tree in memory of her son, Billy, whose love for Christmas inspired a movement.

This single act of remembrance soon encouraged neighbors along Van Ness Boulevard to join, lighting up their own trees and giving rise to the now-iconic holiday display.

Over time, this two-mile stretch became a beacon of cheer, even through the challenges of the Great Depression, earning its cherished nickname and attracting more than 100,000 visitors annually today.

In recent years, the original cedar tree that started it all began to decline despite devoted care from the new homeowners.

Jon Reelhorn of Belmont Nursery shared that the community recognized the need for a solution and explored the idea of cloning the tree to keep the tradition alive.

Cuttings from the cherished tree were sent to Oregon, resulting in eighty healthy saplings that are now thriving on Christmas Tree Lane thanks to the teamwork of Belmont Nursery and the Fig Garden Homeowners Association.

Belmont Nursery expressed,

“We are honored to be part of preserving this beautiful piece of our community’s history.”

Though the roots are new, each tree is a living reflection of the original cedar, symbolizing the enduring joy and unity that Christmas Tree Lane imparts after more than a century.
