Clean Water Brings New Hope to South Sudan Town

The city of Bor in South Sudan recently transformed a devastating flood into an inspiring turnaround, bringing clean water to tens of thousands who once relied on contaminated sources.

With support from the Netherlands and South Korea, a new water treatment facility now provides clean, safe water through a 33-mile pipeline, supplying 28 community kiosks, hundreds of homes, schools, and a hospital.

The project not only ensures safe drinking water but also created jobs for electricians, plumbers, and technicians, further uplifting the community.

Accountants and commercial managers help keep the service affordable, with water costing just a few cents per can—making daily life healthier and more convenient for everyone.

“In 2020, the major flood emergency really eroded the infrastructure, including the water-supply system, and that left the community hugely vulnerable to waterborne diseases,” said Thewodros Mulugeta, UNICEF’s chief of water, sanitation, and hygiene in South Sudan.

Now, thanks to a strategic shift to long-term solutions, local families enjoy year-round irrigation and children stay focused on education instead of fetching water miles away.
