Coco Gauff Triumphs at Wuhan Open Final

Coco Gauff staged a spirited comeback to defeat Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 at the Wuhan Open, adding another championship to her impressive season.

The 21-year-old standout has now claimed two titles this year, including the French Open, and holds 11 career titles in total.

Gauff was down 5-3 in the second set but surged ahead, breaking Pegula’s serve and winning the last four games for victory.

Pegula, who had previously toppled top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, saw her momentum slip as she missed the chance for a 10th career title.

This tournament marked the first final meeting between the two friends, with Pegula leading their head-to-head 4-3, and both having previously won doubles titles together.

“Winning every match (in the tournament) in straight sets, I don’t know if I’ve done that before on a title run,” Gauff said. “I just felt like I was really proud of what I accomplished this week, regardless of the result today.”

During the ceremony, Gauff shared, “When I came on tour, you were one of the first people to be nice to me and welcome me with open arms. That really went a long way, so I appreciate you. It’s great to finally play in the final against you. I hope for many more.”

Pegula responded, “We’ve spent a lot of time together and, even though I’m a bit older, I always admire and respect her so much. She’s just so mature for her age.”
