Quick Smiles:

  • Daycare staff rescued all 33 children after a car crash sparked a fire.
  • Evacuation drills and quick thinking ensured everyone escaped unharmed.
  • The community rallied to support families and staff in the aftermath.

When a vehicle crashed into La Petite Academy in Yukon, Oklahoma, quick-thinking daycare staff dropped everything to evacuate all 33 children safely, even as smoke filled the rooms.

Teachers carried young children—some just one year old—through the chaos, keeping everyone calm and accounted for while first responders rushed to help.

“When I heard the loud bang and the power went out, kids were screaming,” one teacher explained. “That’s when I saw the fire. We were grabbing kids and holding them so they wouldn’t run back inside. Most of our one-year-olds don’t understand danger yet.”

Firefighters noted that regular evacuation drills made a vital difference, and La Petite Academy celebrated its staff for their “nothing short of heroic” response.

Support poured in from first responders, neighbors, and local childcare centers, who offered blankets, food, and comfort to children and families.

Today, all of the children are back home safe, and the community is filled with gratitude for the courage and compassion shown by everyone involved.
