DC Snow Heroes Lend a Hand After Storms

After a severe winter storm blanketed Washington, DC in snow and ice, a group of volunteers known as the DC Snow Heroes grabbed their shovels and began clearing sidewalks for those who couldn’t do it themselves.

The Serve DC program, overseen by the mayor’s office, mobilized residents to support the elderly, young, and disabled people in their neighborhoods.

“As a community, we have to stick together, we have to do what we can do for one another, and it’s a lot of people that [are] unable to do things, so that’s where we come in,”

said David Ford, one of the DC Snow Heroes.

Another volunteer shared,

“Service is the gateway to all success.”

Dense, icy snow made even short walks hazardous, but volunteers quickly made paths safe in front of homes like that of Shirley Thomas, who needs a crutch to walk.

“It’s not too many people in the world like that,”

Thomas commented as she watched her neighbors help.

Director Lamont Carey of Community Affairs emphasized the impact of their work, saying,

“It is outstanding… This is really neighbors helping your neighbors showing the kind of community and love that the mayor thrives off that we are building, and making sure that we sustain a district.”
