Deep Sea Expedition Reveals Hidden Species and Ocean Mysteries

Scientists exploring a deep sea zone between Hawaii and Mexico recently discovered 24 species of colorful shrimp-like animals. The finds include a brand-new taxonomic family and superfamily, revealing entirely new branches of the evolutionary tree.

The international team explored depths reaching up to 20,000 feet in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone to better understand this mysterious ecosystem. Their work shows how much diversity remains hidden in our oceans, as nearly 90% of species in this area are still unnamed.

“To find a new superfamily is incredibly exciting, and very rarely happens so this is a discovery we will all remember,” said Dr. Tammy Horton of the National Oceanographic Center.

The project included aspiring scientists from across Europe, New Zealand, and Canada who gathered in Poland for a massive taxonomy workshop. Participants named the new creatures after relatives, colleagues, and even a video game character that one amphipod resembled.

“The team’s findings provide information that is crucial for future conservation and policy decisions, and it highlights how important it is for this work to continue,” said Dr. Anna Jażdżewska.
