Denver Celebrates First Pit Bull Adoption After Decades-Long Breed Ban

  • Denver celebrated its first pit bull adoption in over 30 years when a 3-year-old pit bull was adopted last week.
  • The city had a ban on the breed back in 1989, a ban that was recently repealed by vote.
  • Gumdrop, now named Odin, will be joining a family with an infant child and no pets.

Gumdrop, a 3-year-old pit bull, made history last week as the first pit bull to be adopted in Denver in over 30 years.

According to local station KMGH, the city enforced a ban on the breed back in 1989 after 20 people had been attacked by pit bulls for the previous five years.

Following the repeal of the decades-long ban on the breed, Gumdrop, now named Odin by his new family, was adopted on Tuesday.

The Denver Animal Shelter made the announcement in a Facebook post that read, “We are so excited to celebrate the first Pit Bull adoption since the new breed ordinance! ????????????❤️ . Gumdrop was so happy to go home with his new family! Today is a day of celebration! ????????❤️???? .”

Denver Department of Public Health & Environment spokesperson Kyle Wagner told PEOPLE that Gumdrop was found as a stray on Dec. 17. He was taken to VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital to get checked for a microchip, but he had none and no once came forward to claim him.

He then stayed at the Denver Animal Shelter and was put up for legal adoption on Jan. 2.

Wagner says that Odin’s new family drove an hour from Colorado Springs after seeing his photo. He will be joining a family with an infant child and no other pets.

Last year, Denver residents voted to lift the citywide ban on pit bulls. Their vote passed with an overwhelming 64.5 percent, according to The Denver Post.

Denver residents can now own or keep pit bulls and other restricted breeds, such as American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, as of Jan. 1, 2021, provided that they have their pet microchipped and obtain a permit.

Owners are restricted to only two pit bulls per home. They are also required to pay a higher fee to maintain appropriate paperwork for their dog, and the pit bull should have no issues for three years.
