At the Aurora Zoo in Guatemala City, an extraordinary moment unfolded when an elephant stepped in to save a struggling gazelle.

The gazelle had tumbled into the watering hole inside their shared enclosure and found itself unable to climb the steep, rocky edges.

Noticing the gazelle’s plight, the elephant approached with determination.

Using its trunk, the elephant initially attempted to pull the gazelle from the water, but the gazelle’s thrashing made the task difficult.

Undeterred, the elephant grasped the gazelle’s horns more securely and successfully lifted it out on the second attempt.

“Mira mira,” or “Look look!” exclaimed a spectator who captured the scene on video, with the crowd erupting in cheers as the gazelle was brought safely back to land.

This is not an isolated incident. In 2022, Trombita, a 61-year-old Asian elephant, noticed another gazelle in distress.

Trombita sounded an alarm with her trumpet call, prompting a zookeeper to rush to the scene and assist the gazelle.

While the enclosure’s water hole might require attention, the presence of these vigilant elephants provides a reassuring layer of safety.

For now, visitors can enjoy the comforting thought of a very large, very gentle lifeguard on duty.
