Sportscaster Erin Andrews is reflecting on her experiences with cervical cancer and infertility, sharing insights she wishes she had known in her 20s.
She believes if she had learned about egg freezing and IVF earlier, she would have taken action then, pointing out how open discussions are far more common today.
“If I had known about freezing eggs and doing IVF in my 20s, I would have done it,” she says.
A strong advocate for annual cancer screenings, Andrews speaks out about early detection and how it can make a difference for women everywhere.
She first began freezing her eggs at 35 and notes it was a step she wishes she had taken sooner.
Diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2017 after a routine appointment, Andrews recalls not having symptoms and not expecting the news.
“I went for a regular, annual appointment with my gynecologist, didn’t think anything was wrong, didn’t have symptoms, was just going because it was time. And I got a call back that I had cervical cancer,” she recalls.
Through years of fertility struggles, Andrews and her husband, Jarret Stoll, considered surrogacy after a long journey with IVF.
She shares that the path included heartbreak, including miscarriages, before welcoming their son Mack with help from a surrogate.
“That was really hard,” she says of the miscarriages. “And then we then found our surrogate that had our son, and that was the most amazing experience in my entire life.”
Now a mom, Andrews describes this chapter as incredible, acknowledging both the joy and challenges of parenting.
Looking to the future, she hopes to instill confidence and self-worth in her son, just as her parents did for her, guided by the lessons she’s learned.
“I just want him to be confident in himself, as well,” Andrews says. “I want to set him up in the proper way for that.”
