Everyday Tape Stops 99% of Floodwater, Offering New Hope for Homeowners

Quick Smiles:
- Simple household tape proved to be a powerful flood defense in lab tests
- University researchers discovered an affordable way to protect homes from rising water
- Everyday families now have an easier solution to stay safe during storms
New research from the University of Hull shows that widely available tape can block up to 99 percent of floodwater, giving families a practical way to protect their homes without heavy lifting.
The study was conducted at the university’s Property Flood Resilience lab, where scientists tested simple, low-cost materials against traditional sandbags. Results showed that tape provided strong protection while being much easier for homeowners to handle in an emergency.
“This is a great example of how small, practical steps can make a big difference in keeping families safe,” said a researcher involved in the project.
Residents facing flood warnings can now turn to a solution that is both affordable and effective, bringing peace of mind during difficult weather.
