A determined young woman from Virginia is balancing college lectures with entrepreneurship by launching a nostalgic general store in her hometown.

Lindsay Goodwin opened the Marketplace and General Store in Olde Towne Portsmouth after being inspired by childhood trips to mountain boutiques.

The business venture serves as a partnership with her father, Tony Goodwin, who wanted to help his daughter anchor herself within the community she loves.

While high season brings plenty of foot traffic, the duo remains focused on maintaining the shop as a permanent fixture for locals.

“Portsmouth is known for its history, and so we wanted to bring back the historical feel, but also the old-fashioned family place for everyone to come,” Goodwin said.

“When they come in, they say, ‘Man, this reminds me of something I grew up on back home,’ and that’s what makes us feel good about what we’ve done,” Mr. Goodwin added.

For this father-daughter team, the goal is to keep the community vibes strong while providing a space where everyone feels welcome.
