Quick Smiles:

  • Sherman Smith mentored Deland McCullough, never knowing he was his biological son.
  • Their shared path in football and life brought them together, creating an amazing family bond.
  • Their inspiring reunion story is set to inspire even more through a potential movie adaptation.

When Deland McCullough met Sherman Smith at age 16, he found a mentor and father figure, never realizing they shared more than just a passion for football.

Their father-son bond was hidden for years, only discovered after McCullough embarked on a search for his biological parents and was astonished to learn Smith was his father.

“The statement that I would make to the players as I coached them, I would say, ‘You may not be looking for a father, but I treat you like you’re my son,’” Smith recalled.

Both men followed remarkably parallel careers, playing at Miami University in Ohio, entering the NFL, and later making their mark as coaches.

McCullough joyfully embraced this newfound family connection and cherished the chance to grow closer with Smith, who hadn’t known about his son for decades.

“He opened the door, and he just opened his arms. He said, ‘My son,’” McCullough remembered.

Smith described the serendipity of their meeting as something guided by fate, saying, “There’s no way you could write this, all these connections. You just have to believe that this is God directing our steps.”

Their connection continues to inspire, as three of McCullough’s four sons now play football, and their unique journey has been shared in a book and may soon become a film.

Football not only brought McCullough and Smith together but also created a powerful legacy of family, hope, and encouragement for future generations.
