  • Juliette Wells and her partner, Reece Mortensen, rescued a baby magpie and took her home.
  • Although their dog, Peggy, used to be scared of magpies, he formed a special bond with his new feathered friend.

About a year ago, Juliette Wells and her partner, Reece Mortensen, stumbled upon a baby Australian magpie, while they were at a dog park with their English Staffordshire bull terrier, Peggy.

The little bird was alone, covered in burs, grass, and twigs — looking so unhealthy.

The couple noticed that the flock parents didn’t seem to mind her. So, they decided to bring her home so she could recover and named her Molly.

At first, Peggy was scared of Molly, since she’d been “swooped on previously by magpies, but was always very curious about her.” And that curiosity seemed to be the way for the two to build their relationship. After a few weeks, they hit it off already.

In fact, Peggy helped save Molly’s life, along with all the nurturing their family has been giving to the little bird.

“The two would lay near each other, not touching, but next to each other. Then they started snuggling together”, Juliette told Daily Paws. Soon, they were inseparable.

“Peggy wanted to help keep this young bird alive, and produced milk to help,” said Juliette.

“I do believe Molly thinks we’re her family. She has many bird friends but sometimes prefers to just hang around Peggy,” she added. “They really do look after each other and have each others’ backs.”

While keeping Molly home, Juliette and Reece kept in mind that she is a wild creature who’d want to come and go as she pleases. So, they let her, knowing that she would always return home to hang out in the yard, sunbathe and play fetch with her favorite furry pal, Peggy.

The bond of the two never stopped from growing. Molly even learned how to bark, just like Peggy. With magpies known to be clever mimics, this came as no surprise. But when the couple witnessed it, they could not help but still get amused.

“She will hear a knock at the door or a noise in the bush and start barking,” Juliette said. “She does it so well, we don’t always know which one of them is barking!”

Now, Peggy has become a real mom after giving birth to a litter of puppies, and Molly has willingly taken up the role of a doting aunt.

“I feel grateful every day to witness their relationship changing and becoming stronger, no matter what happens,” Juliette said.

She added, “It’s true love and unity, regardless of their differences.”
