From Homeless to Hopeful: Max Jones Earns Full Scholarships

Quick Smiles:
- Max Jones overcame homelessness to graduate high school.
- Community support helped him secure full-ride scholarships.
- He plans to give back to those who supported him.
Max Jones, a 19-year-old high school student from Richmond, Virginia, has a story that is nothing short of inspiring. Despite facing significant challenges, including living out of his car, he graduated with several full-ride college scholarships.
Max’s journey wasn’t easy. He attended George Wythe High School while working at a local restaurant.
“I went through a lot,” he shared. “I was homeless for a long period of time.”
His clothing situation reflected his circumstances.
“I still wore the same clothes. They were never clean, they were never dirty. They were just wearing the same clothes. Like sweats, joggers, crocs,” he explained.
The root of his struggles lay in a tumultuous family life. Max lived with his half-siblings and his mother, who worked tirelessly but struggled financially.
The situation worsened when his half-siblings’ fathers came back into their lives, leaving him and his mother alone.
Determined to change his life, Max made a bold decision.
“I know my life is bad, so I took the bus, I paid for a ticket,” he said.
His journey led him to Richmond, where he attended George Wythe High School and saved enough money to buy a car to live in.
He faced daily challenges, such as being “not able to take showers…not able to eat.”
Despite these hardships, teachers and mentors stepped in to offer support, providing food and sometimes covering hotel costs.
A turning point came when Pastor Robert Winfrey from the New Life Deliverance Tabernacle visited his school.
“I wanted to make sure that he wasn’t completely dismantled because of his situation,” Winfrey said.
Pastor Winfrey offered Max a place to stay at the church cottage, providing him with food, a clean bathroom, and a safe place to rest.
“All he needed was that one push, and thank God so far he got that push,” Winfrey remarked.
With the support of his community, Max is set to graduate and has secured full scholarships to Virginia Union University in Richmond, Ohio State, and Paine College in Augusta, Georgia.
“Maybe I might not be fully conscious of what I’m saying right now, but I’m going to change the world and I’m going to give back to everybody that gave to me. Everybody,” he declared.
